Starting the podcast with some simple yet effective fitness for Postpartum Fitness. Our fitness is the most important aspect of our lives and often the most ignored. This is why the first episode of your very own Indian Podcast- Little Fixes is all about Postpartum Fitness.
In this episode, I speak to Ritu Kumar Singh, an ex-army officer and a mom of two.
Who is Ritu-
Ritu was always a fit person and more so after joining Indian Army. Things changed after her first child arrived. She gained 24 kgs without realizing. It happens to many of us especially after first baby. We are so new to everything and with nuclear setup there is not much help for most women. This leads to stress and mothers start ignoring themselves while trying to give their 100% to everything else.
Same happened with Ritu and she realized it soon. She started with Yoga and YouTube videos; added in some of her army training and got back in shape. This took her one whole year but the results she got were long term.
Soon, she left her job with the Army and is now an ISSA (International Sports Sciences Association) certified fitness trainer.
Ritu suffered from Diastasis Recti (DR) after her second pregnancy and went on to do a certification in DR management. She corrected her condition in 6.5 months and got back in her usual fit and fabulous shape.
What is Diastasis Recti
According to Parents.com – It’s a gap in between your right and left abdominal wall muscles that can result in a rounded, protruding belly “pooch”.
It happens when your linea alba- the connective tissue between your left and right abdominal wall muscles stretches during pregnancy to make space for the growing foetus. Sometimes, the tissues get so stretched that they don’t come back to the normal shape even after months of delivery. This results in a protruding belly and the condition known as Diastasis Recti. You are more likely to develop DR if you are carrying multiples or have more than one pregnancy.
You can check it yourself; there are numerous videos online to help you with this. DR can be corrected under proper guidance.
Apart from DR, we talk about the importance of weight training for women and how even a skinny person can actually be ‘fat’.
This episode of Little Fixes Podcast has a ton of information about Postpartum Fitness. Even if you are not a mom or are a mom-to-be, this episode is a must-listen for you because we bust a lot of myths.
There is a lot more information about DR including tips for fitness at home in part-2 of this episode. Don’t miss that.
